| WHO
is the SBBEC? |
SBBEC
is comprised of representatives from the private and public sectors
of the South Bay area of Los Angeles County who sought a forum in
1991 to express common concerns for environmental issues and regulations
impacting businesses and communities. Business entities, government
agencies, and communities pool their expertise in a cooperative relationship
to improve the environment shared by all.
|
WHAT is our Purpose?
- SBBEC's
mission is to assist businesses in developing and sharing environmental
programs, ideas, concepts and issues that will lead to the encouragement
of environmental sustainability in our communities and to promote
business development. Towards this end, SBBEC seeks to:
- promote environmental awareness through education;
expand our pool of expertise to assist businesses in developing environmental
programs;
promote the protection and preservation of natural resources through environmental
sustainability;
encourage responsible environmental practices, polices and standards;
act as a liaison between businesses, local government and communities
on environmental issues;
assist businesses in developing credible environmental programs that promote
cost savings and return on investment;
help businesses in preparing and applying for state solid waste diversion
awards (WRAP). |
HOW
does it achieve its Purpose?
SBBEC
reaches out to businesses and communities through our informational
programs, and to our youth through our K -12 environmental education
programs.
- Business,
government and community outreach is accomplished through:
- meetings;
educational forums;
and seminars/workshops.
|
| The
SBBEC's Cities Subcommittee combines governments and businesses in
networking and assisting with state waste reduction requirements.
The group meets monthly to share ideas and best practices. One of
the group's key projects is the annual Regional Waste Reduction Awards
Program (WRAP) Awards Ceremony, held to honor local businesses for
their exemplary waste reduction efforts. This unique event is the
only such ceremony in the state, partnering the business community,
local government and the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
|
Youth
outreach is sought through activities on two levels: |
| K-8
The
annual Environmental Science Fair is hosted by the SBBEC for students
in grades 5-8 to showcase their ideas on using Earth's natural resources
more responsibly and effectively. Students and their schools are presented
with awards, cash, recognition and publicity. Are you interested in
being a judge? Please contact us and we will send you some information.
No scientific background required: just a desire to interact with
young students and an interest in our environment. |
| High
School and Young Adults
SBBEC
sponsors the Explorer Post program, a division of the Boy Scouts of
America, by providing mentorship for high school students and young
adults pursuing an interest in the environmental fields. The SBBEC's
first Environmental Explorer Post #2005 was established in Carson,
California in 1997. |
WHY participate?
|
| It's
beneficial to you and your organization. We
provide an opportunity to network with other professionals and to
share expertise on environmental issues, including recycling, cost
cutting and regulatory compliance. |
| It's rewarding. Being
a part of a team setting worthwhile goals instills a sense of esprit
de corps and excitement. Achieving the goals of the organization promotes
a sense of personal value, accomplishment and pride.
|
| It's
the right thing to do. We
owe it to ourselves to remain in awe of our natural resouces. We should
do all we can to do no harm to our environment so that it is preserved
for our future generations. To do this, we must pool our expertise
and experience to find workable, sustainable solutions to environmental
problems. |
It's
a successful non-profit volunteer organization. We
proactively strive to preserve and enhance our natural resources.
All of our members volunteer their time and talents to make the SBBEC
